A Brief History of Our Bagel Tradition

Our baking tradition begins with our paternal great grandfather, Grandpa Anshel. In 1901, he and his family emigrated to America from Austria with a little bit of money and decades of baking experience. After settling with his family in New York City, he opened bagel bakeries around the tristate area. With five, some say six stores, he and his fresh, quality bagels became a household name for decades.

About forty years later, after World War II, our maternal grandfather, Grandpa Herb, came over from Europe and was placed in one of Grandpa Anshel’s children’s houses. Soon, Herb started working for Anshel in one of his bakeries and eventually married Harriet, Grandpa Anshel’s granddaughter. In 1964, Grandpa Herb opened Flatlands Bagels in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Using grandpa Anshel’s recipes, he provided the community with fresh bagels and delicious appetizings.

Soon, his bagels grew so popular, Grandpa Herb started mass producing bagels and distributing them around the tristate area. It is said that he ran his ovens 23 out of 24 hours a day until he retired in his early nineties!

Shortly after the opening of Flatlands Bagels, in the early 1970s, Grandpa Herb’s daughter Nancy started dating Ouri Amar. Ouri was also interested in the food industry, so he learned the craft of how to bake bagels . With his new baking knowledge, he married Nancy and opened Jerusalem Bagel Bakery in Coney Island. Over the years, he opened three other restaurants including Primavera Italian restaurant, in Coney Island and other parts of Brooklyn. Eventually he sold them, left Brooklyn, and opened a bagel store in Kew Garden Hills, a perfect location in an up and coming Jewish neighborhood. Then, in 1994, he opened Main Street Bagels and Appetizing right around the corner in Flushing, Queens. Main Street Bagels was such a hit, he quickly expanded into catering and other exciting offerings like a cheese counter, fresh fish and all day omelette station.

For over one hundred years, our family has been providing fresh bagels, baked goods, fish, salads, fruit and more to our communities around New York City and the tristate area. It is our love of the past and our dedicated and warm community that allows us to clearly see our future. We thank you for your continued patronage and look forward to serving you for the next hundred years!
